Winning streak brought to a juddering halt
By Martin Oswick.

Having put eight goals past Great Yarmouth on Saturday FC Clacton were brought down to earth with a bump on Tuesday night as Felixstowe and Walton United recorded a deserved 2-0 victory. Clacton had gone into the game hoping to extend their club record winning streak of eight games but instead the run was meekly surrendered to a generally livelier, organised visiting side who were always in control once Adam Hampson had given them an early lead.

That goal came after six minutes but it was the home side who had the first effort on goal as Matt Waters, Clacton’s main threat all evening, skipped to the byline and drove a low effort that Fred Howe blocked with his feet at his near post.

Two minutes after that effort the visitors took the lead as A long throw was only cleared to the edge of the box where Hampson struck a sweet volley that whistled into Joe Playle’s net.

It could have got even worse for Clacton inside the first ten minutes as Tom Austin ducked under a long ball unaware that striker Ben Cranfield was behind him but fortunately for Clacton Cranfield’s contact was weak and the ball dribbled harmlessly through to Playle.

The play was all in Clacton’s half and before the twenty-five minute mark Cranfield had fired a long range effort inches wide and Playle had to react quickly to get out and smother before Jordan Matthews could unleash another effort.

The home side did finally test Howe again as Matt Cripps intercepted the ball on the edge of his own area, drove into the Felixstowe half where he found Matt Waters and continued his charge to reach the return pass inside the area. However just as the young centre half looked set to score his first Clacton goal he was denied at the last by Howe, stretching out a foot to deflect his effort away.

With the score 1-0 at half time there was a sense that the next goal would be crucial and it was Felixstowe who got it, just three minutes after the interval, in bizarre circumstances. There seemed nothing untoward as Kyelan Marvell played an innocuous looking pass back towards Playle but, inexplicably, the keeper completely missed his attempted clearance, connecting with only air as the ball serenely continued completely unhindered to trickle almost apologetically into the empty net.

The closest Clacton came to getting back into the game was with just over ten minutes to go when an excellent passing move put substitute Aaron Condon in on the left side of the area but his drive flashed across the face of goal. With it Clacton’s last real hope of salvaging anything from the game was gone and at the final whistle it was the Suffolk Seasiders who were celebrating whilst Clacton will look to bounce back in the FA Vase against Whitton United on Saturday.
